Sports Mole runs the rule over Benfica's 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Benfica were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night despite beating Group C winners Paris Saint-Germain.

The Portuguese side came from behind to win 2-1 at Estadio da Luz thanks to goals from Lima and Nicolas Gaitan, after Edinson Cavani had opened the scoring.

However, other results didn't go their way, ensuring their elimination from the competition.

Was it a fair reflection of the match? Sports Mole delves into the details to find out.

Match statistics:

Benfica:

Paris Saint-Germain:
Shots 8
On target 5
Possession 55%
Corners 3
Fouls 14

Was the result fair?

Yes. PSG played as if they didn't have anything to achieve. Benfica started slowly but grew into the game just before the break as their hunger intensified.

Benfica's performance

They had it all to do and did as much as they could. They always looked threatening in attack, and held off the threat of Cavani and co. at the other end very well.

Paris Saint-Germain's performance

Poor. It wasn't hard to see that the French champions had already got the job done prior to this clash. They weren't sharp enough in attack, were too sloppy in defence, and generally just didn't seem too bothered about being there.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Nicolas Gaitan: Not many players stood out for Benfica as they all played fairly well, but Gaitan was a threat all evening whether he was creating chances or trying to finish them off. He took his goal well and could have provided several more had his teammates been sharper.

Biggest gaffe

Javier Pastore has had a shocker for PSG this season and, although his blushes were spared by the offside flag, the Argentine had a great chance to equaliser for the visitors with a header from the edge of the six-yard box, but his effort was weak and woeful.

Referee performance

Mark Clattenburg had a very good game. He dished out several yellows that were all justified and kept a lid on a game that threatened to get out of control at times.

What next?

Benfica: They travel to Olhanense in the Primera Liga on Sunday.

Paris Saint-Germain: The Ligue 1 leaders make the trip to Rennes on Saturday.
