Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund have reached the half-time interval goalless following an opening 45 minutes which saw both sides miss good opportunities.
Dortmund dominated possession for much of the early stages, but the hosts could have been ahead when Valon Behrami found space in the box to drag an effort past the post.
Josef Zinnbauer's side continued to look threatening going forward, with Nicolai Muller delivering an inviting cross to Mohamed Gouaida, who sent his shot over from close range.
The visitors finally started to find a cutting edge to their play midway through the first half, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's pace created enough space in the box to unleash an effort which forced Jaroslav Drobny into a fine save.
It was Jurgen Klopp's men who remained on top heading into the interval, but the hosts held firm to stay on level terms.
