Bristol City climb out of the Championship bottom three with a shock 3-1 victory over promotion-chasing Middlesbrough at a foggy Riverside Stadium.

Bristol City produced a major upset in the Championship by beating high-flying Middlesbrough in foggy conditions at the Riverside Stadium this afternoon.

Stephen Pearson took advantage of Middlesbrough defenders unsighted by the weather to strike a 63rd-minute winner that sees the visitors climb out of the relegation zone.

Albert Adomah gave City the lead when he squeezed Joe Bryan's cross under Jason Steele from just inside the six-yard box.

Boro responded well after conceding and began to find holes in a fragile Robins defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Lukas Jutkiewicz headed wide from an unmarked position at the back post, but his strike partner Ishmael Miller had better luck in front of goal and brought the hosts level when he stabbed Grant Leadbitter's corner home from close range.

The early stages of the second half were disrupted by heavy fog, but the officials opted to play on despite both sets of players having difficulties with the conditions.

It was particularly troublesome for both goalkeepers, and City stopper Tom Heaton was thankful to Neil Kilkenny's goal-line clearance when he punched a Leadbitter cross onto his own post.

At the other end, Adomah came close to a second when he hit the crossbar from 20 yards, but but the woodwork would not deny Pearson, who converted Neil Danns's pass from inside the six-yard box.

Tony Mowbray's side applied late pressure in search of an equaliser but Steve Davies made sure of the points for Bristol with an 89th-minute third.
