Premier League side Burnley have been defeated by Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday in tonight's League Cup clash at Turf Moor, the Owls scoring a penalty in the second half to claim a 1-0 win.
The first effort of the night fell to Kamil Zayatte for the away side, but it flew just wide of Matt Gilks's post in the fifth minute.
Just two minutes later, Chris Maguire's cross fell invitingly to Gary Madine, who proceeded to head just over the Burnley crossbar.
Maguire was involved once again when his cross was tipped onto the bar by the Clarets keeper midway through the first half.
The top-flight team were able to carve out chances of their own eventually, Ashley Barnes heading just over Chris Kirkland's bar in the 24th minute.
Ross Wallace had the final chance of the half when his free kick was deflected out for a corner.
Burnley were undoubtedly invigorated in the second half, with Marvin Sordell holding off a challenge in the box before turning and firing just over.
Matthew Taylor then curled an effort wide on the hour after Scott Arfield's initial effort was blocked.
For all of Burnley's new-found dominance, however, their Championship opponents would ultimately draw first blood, as Jason Shackell brought down Jeremy Helan in the box in the 77th minute.
Adthe Nuhiu made no mistake from the spot to give the Owls what would prove to be the decisive goal.
