Michael Keane's header secured Burnley's first win back in the Championship, condemning Brentford to their first league defeat in the process.
After a cagey opening, in which little in the way of chances was created, Burnley took the lead as Keane nodded home David Jones's corner at the back post.
Brentford, having sold star striker Andre Gray to the Clarets on Friday, struggled to find that clinical touch, and could have been 2-0 down at the break, only for Scott Arfield to fire over from the edge of the box.
The second half was played out in much the same vein, with clear cut chances few and far between, but Burnley substitute Sam Vokes should have settled the match when gifted a superb chance, but the striker failed to keep his effort down.
