Charlton Athletic eased past Dagenham & Redbridge courtesy of a 4-1 victory at The Valley to secure their place in the second round of the Capital One Cup this evening.
The visitors were the first to threaten when Kasper Hamalainen found space to fire a shot at goal, but Nick Pope was able to make the save.
Guy Luzon's men came within inches of taking the lead when Tony Watt was brought down 25 yards from goal and a free kick was awarded. Johnnie Jackson took the set piece and powered a strike towards the net, but his effort cannoned off the crossbar and bounced over.
The Addicks took the lead in the 26th minute as Jackson played Watt through on goal and the striker slotted the ball past Mark Cousins, after his initial strike had been blocked.
Charlton doubled their lead just before the break when Karlan Ahearne-Grant netted his first goal for the club as Morgan Fox teed him up on the edge of the box, and his effort beat Cousins.
In the second half, the Addicks came close to scoring their third goal when El-Hadji Ba carved out space to unleash a powerful strike at goal, but his effort crashed off the crossbar.
Charlton did get their third goal as Watt slipped a through-ball into the path of Zakara Bergdich, who maintained his composure to slot the ball past Cousins for a debut goal.
The visitors got a goal back when Ashley Chambers raided down the wing and put the ball into the middle for Christian Doidge to steer his strike past Pope.
The home side secured their victory when Ba played Reza Ghoochannejhad behind the Dagenham defence and the forward made no mistake firing the ball past Cousins to seal the win for Luzon's men.
