Chelsea team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Newcastle United

Sports Mole rounds up all of Chelsea's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Tuesday's EFL Cup quarter-final with Newcastle United.
Sports Mole

Chelsea will endeavour to advance to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup when Newcastle United travel to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino's troops lifted some of the pressure off their manager's shoulders with a routine 2-0 beating of Sheffield United on Saturday, as Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson struck after the half-time interval.

The victory has temporarily propelled Chelsea up to 10th place in the Premier League standings, although results on Sunday could potentially push them down into the bottom half again.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Chelsea's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their showdown with the Magpies, who bounced back from their European exit by seeing off 10-man Fulham 3-0 at the weekend.

Ben Chilwell

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: Unknown

Ben Chilwell continues to rehabilitate from a hamstring injury, and the left-back is set to miss the remainder of 2023, although there is hope that he will be back in action at some stage in January.

Wesley Fofana

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Wesley Fofana went under the knife to treat a severe ACL injury over the summer, and the former Leicester City man is highly unlikely to be seen on the field again this season.

Trevoh Chalobah

Status: Out
Type of injury: Thigh
Possible return date: Unknown

Defender Trevoh Chalobah has not played a single competitive minute for Chelsea this term due to a thigh injury and subsequent setback, and it remains unclear when he might be given the thumbs-up to play again.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Similarly, Carney Chukwuemeka has suffered from complications in his recuperation from a knee injury, and the midfielder will remain on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

Romeo Lavia

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: December 30 (vs. Luton Town)

Romeo Lavia has been edging closer and closer to making his Chelsea debut as he battles back from an ankle injury, but he has only taken part in partial training with the team and is unlikely to be considered for selection in midweek.

Lesley Ugochukwu

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: Unknown

Summer signing Lesley Ugochukwu has been working his way back from a muscular injury in recent weeks, and the Frenchman should not be given the green light to make his comeback here.

Noni Madueke

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: Unknown

Noni Madueke remains in the care of the doctors due to a muscular injury, and the winger is also expected to miss the visit of the Magpies.

Reece James

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: Unknown

Injury-riddled captain Reece James sustained another severe hamstring problem in Chelsea's loss to Everton earlier this month, and the right-back is set for a couple of months in the treatment room at least, with surgery not being ruled out.

Robert Sanchez

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: January 31 (vs. Liverpool)

Robert Sanchez was another casualty of the defeat to the Toffees, and Pochettino has conceded that he will have to cope without his first-choice goalkeeper for a number of weeks.

Marc Cucurella

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: Unknown

Finally, Marc Cucurella completed Chelsea's trifecta of Everton injuries by twisting his ankle, which will also keep the left-back out of contention for Tuesday's game.

CHELSEA'S SUSPENSION LIST

Chelsea have no players banned for the quarter-final.
