Sports Mole casts an eye over West Ham United's 3-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea.

Goals from West Ham trio Carlton Cole, Mohamed Diame and Modibo Maiga at Upton Park this afternoon ensured that Rafael Benitez is still without a win as manager of Chelsea.

Spanish attacker Juan Mata put Chelsea in front during the first half and that is how the two sides went into the break.

However, after the break the Hammers rallied and managed to claim the points.

Here, Sports Mole looks back over the match to determine whether or not the result was a fair one.

Was the result fair?

It was a tale of two halves if truth be told. Chelsea dominated the opening 45 minutes and deserved to go into the break 1-0 up. However, after the break a change of tactics had West Ham in the ascendancy. You'd have to say that the Hammers deserved their victory because they took their chances.

West Ham's performance

The less said about their first-half display the better! From then on, though, they were pretty much faultless. They created numerous chances and took three of them smartly. Also, when asked to defend, they stood firm to any threat that Chelsea posed.

Chelsea's performance

With 45 minutes gone, it looked as though the Blues were going to cruise to victory. West Ham's tactical switch appeared to disrupt Chelsea in the second half though, and between Benitez and his players, they were unable to come up with an answer.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Mohamed Diame: He may have only been on the field of play for 45 minutes, but Diame's introduction swung the game in West Ham's favour. He broke up numerous Chelsea attacks, while also getting forward well himself. His goal was no more than his performance deserved as well. Without him, West Ham probably would not have won today.

Biggest gaffe

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech was criticised for coming off his line when he was not needed against Juventus recently. He did something similar today and ended up punching the ball well outside of area. The Czech stopper was also booked for his troubles.

Referee's performance

When he looks back, Martin Atkinson will probably admit that he didn't have the best of matches. He got a number of decisions wrong - the major one was allowing West Ham's first goal to stand. Cole was all over Branislav Ivanovic, but Atkinson failed to blow up.

What's next?

West Ham: The Hammers are at home again next Sunday when Liverpool will be the visitors to Upton Park.

Chelsea: Benitez's next chance to gain his first Premier League success will come at Sunderland a week today.
