Ex-Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard has described his on-the-pitch rivalry with Steven Gerrard as "war".
The 37-year-old will be lining up for New York City FC on Sunday against Los Angeles Galaxy, which counts the former Liverpool captain among its recruits.
Lampard told BBC Sport: "We had many rivalries over the years with Liverpool and Chelsea and it was intense. When we step on the pitch we both want to win and we're both bad losers, so that won't change.
"When that whistle goes and for 90 minutes we're competing against each other, it's war. We fight against each other, we always have."
Lampard and Gerrard played together for England between 2000 and 2014.
