Chelsea edge out Everton

Fernando Torres scores late in the game to hand Chelsea all three points against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Fernando Torres's first Premier League goal since December allowed Chelsea to record a 2-1 victory from their home clash with Everton at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

It took the hosts just seven minutes to go in front through Juan Mata, who reacted quickest to Tim Howard's failure to hold a low effort from Demba Ba to score from close range.

However, their lead lasted until the 14th minute as the away side levelled up proceedings. Victor Anichebe and Steven Naismith exchanged passes on the edge of the area before the latter lofted the ball beyond the reach of Petr Cech.

Further chances were created as the half drew to a close and it was Everton who went closest to scoring the game's third goal, but Darron Gibson's effort cannoned to safety off the post.

The hosting Blues dominated large parts of the second half, but they, and in particular Ba, spurned a number of opportunities.

Their pressure finally told 14 minutes from time, though, as Victor Moses flicked the ball into the path of Torres and the Spaniard in turn beat Howard from close range to hand the Londoners all three points.

The match marked the last time that Chelsea's interim manager Rafael Benitez and Everton's David Moyes would take charge of their respective clubs.
