Colorado Rapids slumped to a third successive MLS defeat after going down 2-1 to Real Salt Lake in Denver this morning.
Sixteen minutes elapsed before the hosts moved ahead when Kevin Doyle rose highest to meet a free kick from former Republic of Ireland teammate Sean St Ledger and head home.
The visitors levelled up in style when Joao Plata's 33rd-minute free kick sailed into the top corner beyond the reach of Clint Irwin.
Not content with the equaliser, Real continued to attack and their adventure was rewarded just before the break when Luke Mulholland drilled home from outside the box.
Chances were at a premium for much of the second half but Irwin came to the rescue to deny Plata's stinging effort on 69 minutes and preserve the hosts' slim chances of a comeback.
With seven minutes to play, Lucas Pittinari spurned a good chance to level matters but he headed over from less than six yards out as Salt Lake hung on.
