Derby County remain fifth in the Championship after drawing 4-4 in a thrilling encounter at Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town and Derby County played out a 4-4 draw in a thrilling Championship encounter at the John Smith's Stadium

Derby enjoyed most of the early possession and, just after the quarter-hour mark, they went in front thanks to Tom Ince, who fired an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

The visitors continued to have the majority of possession, but Huddersfield remained a threat in attack, with Nahki Wells missing the target after being set up by Ishmael Miller.

That opening encouraged the home side and they were back on level terms seven minutes before the break as Oscar Gobern controlled a cross from Conor Coady before firing the ball into the net.

Three minutes later, the turnaround was complete as Mark Hudson powered a header past Lee Grant before the Rams were stunned in first-half injury time when Reece James curled a corner in at the near post.

Soon after the restart, Wells had a chance to extend his side's advantage, but he was denied and Simon Dawkins soon got on the end of a cross from Stephen Warnock to find the bottom corner and make it 3-2.

Derby were rejuvenated and, just after the hour mark, they got back to 3-3 when Dawkins set up Jesse Lingard for the on-loan midfielder to drive the ball into the corner on the edge of the area.

However, Huddersfield were not prepared to stay under pressure and they soon found a seventh goal of a remarkable contest through Wells, whose deflected shot found its way past Grant in the Derby goal.

That lead lasted just seven minutes, though, as Ince picked up the ball outside of the area before driving forward and firing his shot past Alex Smithies to earn his team a deserved share of the spoils.
