Derby County manager Nigel Clough has admitted that he would like John Brayford to remain with the club.
The right-back has just 12 months left to run on his current deal at Pride Park and has been the subject of reported interest from Wigan Athletic in recent days.
However, Clough is keen to tie the 25-year-old down to a new contract before the end of the transfer window.
"We are going to sit down with John next week and have a chat," he told the Derby Telegraph. "The situation hasn't changed much. I don't think John really wants to go.
"I know the window is open for another four weeks after the start of the season but it would be nice to try and get something sorted before then, if possible."
Premier League duo West Ham United and Cardiff City are also said to be monitoring the defender's situation.
