Gary Cahill delighted by England victory

Gary Cahill claims that England's 2-0 win over Switzerland should lift some of the "doom and gloom" around the national team.

England defender Gary Cahill has claimed that Monday's victory over Switzerland should represent a positive step forward for the team.

The Three Lions started their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign last night with an impressive 2-0 win in Basel.

Following a disappointing summer that saw Roy Hodgson's side exit the World Cup at the group stage, Cahill now believes that there is cause for optimism around the England camp.

"We know about the disappointment in the summer but we draw a line under that now and move forward," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "I don't think the criticism will be blown away. It is going to take time but it is a great start.

"In the period of two games we are not going to change everyone's opinion, but certainly I hope it is not all doom and gloom. I hope there are a few happy faces around. I think we deserve credit for this game and we are looking forward to next month."

England play their next qualifier on October 9 when they host San Marino at Wembley Stadium.
