England captain Wayne Rooney expresses his delight for teammate Danny Welbeck after the Arsenal striker struck twice to defeat Switzerland.

England captain Wayne Rooney has declared himself "delighted" for Danny Welbeck after the striker netted both goals in their 2-0 win over Switzerland on Monday evening.

Welbeck, who signed for Arsenal on transfer deadline day, made the most of Daniel Sturridge's injury by bagging a brace to get Roy Hodgson's side's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign off to a great start.

Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, the Manchester United skipper said: "We defended well as a team which was important. We caught them well on the break with the speed we've been talking about. Danny got two great goals, I'm delighted for him.

"We've put the work in, we worked on our defensive shape when we haven't got the ball and then springing from defence to attack, which you saw with the two goals tonight.

"We played some great stuff today. We're pleased. The things we've worked on the training ground have paid off, so it's a happy performance for us."

Meanwhile, Three Lions boss Hodgson said that he was hoping to see his side take confidence from the win.
