Wayne Rooney has conceded that England must turn out better performances at Euro 2016 than their showing against Portugal at Wembley this evening.
Despite facing 10 men for 55 minutes following Bruno Alves's red card, it took the Three Lions until four minutes from the end to break their opponents down when Chris Smalling headed in.
Talking to ITV Sport, captain Rooney said: "We won the game but it was always difficult. They went to 10 men and that can happen in football. We were the better team.
"We need to play better, we know that. But it's a good sign that we didn't play well and won the game."
Rooney featured for 78 minutes before being replaced by Adam Lallana.
