Sports Mole previews Tuesday's UEFA Nations League clash between Denmark and England, including team news and predicted lineups.
Sports Mole

England will be looking to make it back-to-back victories in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League when they travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions opened their League A Group 4 campaign with a 1-0 victory in Iceland on Saturday, while Denmark suffered a 2-0 defeat to Belgium to immediately drop to the bottom of the section.

Match preview

Denmark were up against it from the moment that they fell 1-0 behind to Belgium on Saturday night, and Dries Mertens made sure of the points for the visitors when he struck a second in the 76th minute.

As a result, there is pressure on the Danes to pick up a good result in their second match in the section, although the nation's main focus will certainly be on preparing for next summer's European Championships.

Kasper Hjulmand's side qualified for the Euros courtesy of finishing second in Group D behind Switzerland, remaining unbeaten across their eight matches.

Denmark won two and drew two of their four group matches against Wales and the Republic of Ireland in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League, meanwhile, to earn promotion to League A.

It is a big ask for them to finish above both Belgium and England in this section, but a positive result against the Three Lions would lead them nicely into their next UEFA Nations League game against Iceland.

England, meanwhile, were far from their best in Saturday's clash with Iceland but still managed to pick up all three points courtesy of a late penalty from Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling.

Iceland actually missed penalty of their own in the 93rd minute, while both teams had players sent off, Kyle Walker receiving his marching orders in the 70th minute before Sverrir Ingason left the field late on.

It was not a pretty performance from Gareth Southgate's side, but there is certainly an unfamiliar look to the Three Lions squad at this moment in time due to injuries and enforced withdrawals.

England finished third in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League, impressively winning a group that contained Spain and Croatia before losing to Netherlands in the semi-finals of the competition.

The Three Lions beat Switzerland on penalties to claim third, though, and will be looking to move onto six points in Group 4 ahead of their next game in the section at home to a very strong Belgium on October 11.

Team News

Denmark have no injury concerns following the Belgium clash, and it would certainly not be a surprise to see Hjulmand send the same starting XI onto the field for Tuesday's game.

There will be plenty of familiar names on show for the hosts, with Leicester City's Kasper Schmeichel, Chelsea's Andreas Christensen, Inter Milan's Christian Eriksen, Tottenham Hotspur's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Barcelona's Martin Braithwaite all in line to feature.

Kasper Dolberg has been in excellent form for Nice since arriving from Ajax and should keep out Andreas Cornelius in attack, while Yussuf Poulsen will also feature in a forward area.

As for England, Walker's suspension will open the door for Trent Alexander-Arnold to return to the starting XI at right-back, but the bulk of the side that featured in Iceland should keep their spots.

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood both made their international bows last time out but neither will be involved in this game after the pair broke quarantine guidelines in Iceland.

Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane and Sterling will again feature as the front three, while Kieran Trippier could keep his spot at left-back despite the presence of Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Harry Winks and Harry Maguire are amongst the notable absentees, and there could be more debutants, with Conor Coady, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips and Maitland-Niles hoping to be involved in some capacity, potentially off the bench.

Mason Mount could take Foden's spot in midfield, while James Ward-Prowse is likely to keep out Grealish and Phillips to again feature in a midfield three.

Jordan Pickford is also expected to retain the gloves as he was chosen ahead of both Nick Pope and Dean Henderson on Saturday despite a patchy season for Everton.

Denmark possible starting lineup:
Schmeichel; Wass, Kjaer, Christensen, Skov; Delaney, Hojbjerg, Eriksen; Braithwaite, Dolberg, Poulsen

England possible starting lineup:
Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Dier, Trippier; Mount, Rice, Ward-Prowse; Sterling, Kane, Sancho

We say: Denmark 1-1 England

England were fortunate to beat Iceland on Saturday, and it promises to be a much tougher test against Denmark, who have only lost one of their last 16 matches in all competitions. We are finding it difficult to separate the two sides in this match and have therefore tipped a low-scoring draw.
