Wednesday's sole and final second-round encounter of this year's Capital One Cup takes place at Oakwell as League One side Barnsley host Everton of the Premier League.

Everton have never won the competition and will be keen to avoid an early upset as they look to end a 20-year wait for any title.

Barnsley

The home side come into this match on a four-game unbeaten run in all competitions after a losing start to the new season.

They went down 3-1 at Chesterfield on the opening day but then won three on the bounce, including a penalty shootout victory over fellow League One side Scunthorpe United in the first round, before Saturday's goalless draw at home to Bradford City.

That leaves them 10th in the third tier, just a point behind the playoff places after four games of the season.

Last season Lee Johnson guided the Tykes to an 11th-place finish and they are hoping to push towards the top six having made some bold summer signings.

Five new faces arrived permanently, while youngsters from Arsenal and Manchester United, including highly-rated Dan Crowley, also came in on loan to bolster the squad.

Barnsley haven't got past the second round of the League Cup for six seasons, with their only domestic cup triumph the 1912 FA Cup.

Everton

After making his mark in an impressive debut season in charge of the Toffees, Roberto Martinez endured a tough campaign last term as his players slumped in the league with the commitment of playing in Europe.

At one point the blue half of Merseyside were within six points of the relegation zone, but they managed to pull away and finish in the safety of 11th place with 25 fewer points than 2013-14.

So, no Europe this season but Martinez's men got off to a slow start with a 2-2 draw at home to newly-promoted Watford. They picked up a first victory of the season by impressively winning 3-0 at Southampton before Sunday's first defeat at the hands of early pacesetters Manchester City.

Just four new faces have been added to the squad this summer, but further arrivals are expected in the final week of the transfer window. The bulk of last season's squad remains, but rumours continue to link young defender John Stones with a move to Chelsea. When asked if the Englishman had handed in a transfer request, Martinez wouldn't comment at a recent press conference.

Everton's last trophy was the 1995 FA Cup and they have never won the League Cup, finishing as runners-up in 1977 and 1984.

In the 31 years since their last final appearance, they have reached the quarter-finals or semi-finals on just three occasions. They have gone out at the third-round stage the last three years, but not fallen in the second round for 14 years.

Team News

Stones is already the subject of much media attention, but the cameras will be even more focused on the defender as he returns to the club that Everton signed him from two-and-a-half years ago.

Mason Holgate will also be in familiar surroundings after swapping the Tykes for the Toffees this summer.

Martinez has confirmed that a number of changes will be made to the side that started against City and that one of those coming in will be Bryan Oviedo at left-back.

For the hosts, Johnson has said that his squad are itching to be selected so that they can face the Premier League big boys.

The Yorkshire side are waiting for confirmation from Arsenal that Crowley can feature, while Ryan Williams will not be available as he is missing for a further week or so.

Head To Head

This will be the first match between the two sides since February 1998, when Barnsley were in the top flight alongside the Toffees.

That season Everton won 4-2 at home before drawing 2-2 at Oakwell in the most recent meeting.

The Tykes and Toffees have never been drawn against each other in the League Cup, while Barnsley's last win against the blue half of Merseyside was in a 1951 Division Two encounter.
