Sports Mole previews Tuesday's friendly clash between Coventry City and Everton, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Everton's preparations for the new Premier League season will continue on Tuesday evening with a clash against Championship outfit Coventry City in the West Midlands.

The Toffees will begin their 2024-25 Premier League campaign against Brighton & Hove Albion on August 17, while Coventry's new Championship season will start away to Stoke City on August 10.

Match preview

Coventry finished ninth in the Championship last season, so they are preparing for another campaign in the second tier, which their 2024-25 challenge getting underway against Stoke on August 10.

Mark Robins's side have since played three times this summer, opening their preparations for the new season with a goalless draw against Getafe, before recording a 3-1 victory over Stevenage on July 23.

Coventry were also in action on Saturday, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Darmstadt, but they still have another two friendlies after this one, facing Werder Bremen and Roma on August 3 and August 6 respectively.

The Sky Blues have made four signings this summer, with their biggest arrival proving to be 23-year-old midfielder Jack Rudoni, who has made the move to the club from Huddersfield Town.

Meanwhile, Callum O'Hare and Simon Moore are among four players to have left since the end of last season.

Everton finished 15th in the Premier League last season, with the Toffees overcoming some relegation fears to retain their spot in the top flight of English football.

There remains off-the-field drama due to the latest takeover collapse, but head coach Sean Dyche and his players simply have to focus on what they can control, and the start of the new campaign is just around the corner.

Everton opened their preparations for the new season with a 3-3 draw against Sligo Rovers on July 19, before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Salford City on Saturday.

Dyche's team will face Preston North End and Roma in their final two friendlies of the summer before opening their new Premier League campaign against Brighton on August 17.

Everton have managed to make three signings this summer, bringing in Iliman Ndiaye, Tim Iroegbunam and Jesper Lindstrom, while their major departure has been Amadou Onana, but Jarrad Branthwaite remains at Goodison Park for the moment despite the widespread speculation surrounding his future.

Team News

Coventry could once again have Oliver Dovin between the sticks on Tuesday, and the XI is expected to be similar to the one that started against Darmstadt last time out.

Milan Van Ewijk and Joel Latibeaudiere are again both in line for spots at the back for the Sky Blues.

Meanwhile, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark should continue in the XI, but there could be a change in the final third of the field, with Fabio Tavares in line for a start.

As for Everton, this match will come too soon for new signing Lindstrom, while Ndiaye, Idrissa Gueye and James Tarkowski remain doubts alongside Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson.

Branthwaite is also not yet ready to feature, but the squad should be more experienced than the one that was available for the clash with Salford last time out.

Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin should continue in the final third of the field, while there are also expected to be starts for Jack Harrison and James Garner, but Jordan Pickford is still out due to his involvement for England at this summer's European Championship.

Coventry City possible starting lineup:
Dovin; Van Ewijk, Latibeaudiere, Binks, Bidwell; Eccles, Budoni, Palmer, Sakamoto; Mason-Clark, Tavares

Everton possible starting lineup:
Virginia; Coleman, Keane, Holgate, Young; Harrison, Gueye, Iroegbunam, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin, Beto

We say: Coventry City 1-1 Everton

Everton struggled in their defeat to Salford last time out, and this has the potential to be another tricky match for the Premier League club. Coventry are a solid outfit, and we are backing a low-scoring draw here.
