Sports Mole previews Thursday's Europa League clash between Gent and Red Star Belgrade, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

The Ghelamco Arena will host Thursday's Europa League game between Gent and Red Star Belgrade, as Gent attempt to get themselves off the bottom of Group L.

Red Star's 2-1 win against Gent in the reverse fixture was the first-ever meeting between the sides in all European competitions and helped Red Star keep pace with group leaders Hoffenheim.

Match preview

Gent will have felt unfortunate to not have got something from the reverse fixture against Red Star.

Gent failed to turn their dominance into an equalising goal in the second half of the clash in Belgrade, and given their attacking potential, they could have more luck at home on Thursday.

They are however on a poor run of form in the competition having lost all three of their Europa League games so far, more than they had lost in their previous 14 matches in the competition.

The Belgian side are unbeaten in three games in their domestic league and will hope that they can see that form translate into the European competition come Thursday.

The Serbian champions did well to beat the Belgians in Belgrade, with Dejan Stankovic's men moving one step closer to booking their place in the last 32.

Aleksandar Katai has become the key man for Crvena Zvezda this season, and all eyes will be on the former Los Angeles Galaxy man when the two teams face each other in Gent.

He could become the first player to score in three consecutive European matches for Red Star since Goran Drulic in the 2000-01 UEFA Cup.

History is not on the Serbians' side though, as they have lost all four of their away games against Belgian opposition in European competition, with this their first such match since a 3-2 loss to Germinal Ekeren in the 1997-98 Cup Winners' Cup.

A win in Belgium would mean three consecutive wins in major European competition for the first time since the 1991-92 European Cup.

Team News

Dejan Stankovic has no fresh injury worries, aside from midfielder Sekou Sanogo who will be sidelined through suspension.

Milan Rodic also tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss out.

For Gent, Giorgi Chakvetadze and Alexandre De Bruyn are both likely to miss the game with injury for the hosts.

Roman Yaremchuk will also miss out as he recovers from COVID-19.

Gent possible starting lineup:
Coosemans; Botaka, Hanche-Olsen, Mohammadi, Castro-Montes, Marreh; Odjidja-Ofoe, Vadis, Sulayman, Owusu; Bukari

Red Star Belgrade possible starting lineup:
Borjan; Milunovic, Degenek, Gobeljic, Gajic; Katai, Kanga, Ivanic, Nikolic, Ben; Falcinelli

We say: Gent 1-1 Red Star Belgrade

This matchup was closely contested when they met recently, and we expect to see more of the same. Gent will be looking to get on the front foot early on, but Red Star Belgrade will be dangerous on the counter, and we expect the spoils to be shared.
