Sejad Salihovic made it 2-0 to Hoffenheim in the 18th minute when he headed in Kevin Volland's cross from inside the six-yard box.
Nuremberg gave themselves a chance of a comeback in the 58th minute when they earned a penalty for Koen Casteels's challenge on Niklas Stark inside the area.
Timmy Simons made no mistake from 12 yards, but Nuremberg held on for the final 30 minutes at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar Arena for the win.
