Sports Mole brings you match analysis from Sheffield Wednesday's surprise win over Hull City in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday travelled to Hull City in the knowledge that a draw would lift them out of the bottom three in the Championship.

They took a surprise lead over their high-flying opponents through Reda Johnson, but Hull captain Robert Koren levelled the match late in the second half.

Just when the hosts thought they had rescued a point, Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic spilled the ball into his own goal before Michail Antonio sealed the points for the Owls deep in stoppage time.

In addition to the four goals, there were controversial refereeing decisions and a late penalty miss for Sports Mole to dissect in our in-depth analysis.

Match statistics:

On target 7
Possession 47%

Fouls 8

Sheffield Wednesday:

Possession 53%

Fouls 10

Was the result fair?

Absolutely. Dave Jones's side demonstrated quintessential away-day football. They were organised at the back, strong in midfield and looked dangerous going forward despite playing without a recognised striker.

Hull's performance

Steve Bruce's side did not look their usual selves tonight. They were second best for much of the game, with the exception of a purple patch towards the end of the first half. Jay Simpson's stoppage-time penalty miss summed up their wastefulness appropriately.

Sheffield Wednesday's performance

As previously stated, the Owls played some good football tonight and kept their heads up despite being the victim of some questionable refereeing decisions. The final scoreline of 3-1 was an accurate reflection of the contest.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Miguel Llera: The Spaniard traditionally plays as a defender, but he was effective for Wednesday across the pitch. He didn't give Hull's strikeforce an inch in the danger zone and caused them all kinds of problems from set pieces.

Biggest gaffe

Calamity from Jakupovic in the 85th minute. This is one game the Hull keeper will be hoping to forget in a hurry. Not only did he spill the ball into his own net to hand the Owls the lead, the Swiss shot-stopper picked up a nasty injury in the process and had to be substituted.

Referee performance

Mark Haywood's performance was highly questionable, particularly if you happen to be a Sheffield Wednesday supporter. Not only did he fail to send off Abdoulaye Faye for a terrible two-footed tackle in the first half, he robbed the Owls of a perfectly legitimate goal in the second. The sooner we get goal-line technology, the better.

What next?

Hull: Hull pay a visit to League One Leyton Orient for their FA Cup third-round replay.

Sheffield Wednesday: It's FA Cup action for the Owls too. They take on MK Dons in their third-round replay.
