Hull City boss Steve Bruce has conceded that his side did not deserve to take anything from their Championship clash against Charlton Athletic.

Abel Hernandez scored a late equaliser for the Tigers after Simon Makienok put the home side ahead at The Valley.

However, Johann Berg Gudmundsson fired the Addicks to the victory in the 98th minute, leaving Bruce to blast his side's performance.

He told the club's official website: "The first half was arguably the worst game of football I've seen in a long, long time. It took their first goal to wake us up a little bit and after that we had two or three chances late on.

"At that stage, I thought if anybody was going to win the game it would be us but we have to be better than we were for that first hour or so. Mistakes have cost us again and we should be defending better than we did.

"Overall it was awful and the only excuse you can offer is that it was very hot, but I'm not looking for excuses. It was never going to be fast and furious as you would expect it to be because of that, but for long periods it wasn't great. We didn't deserve anything from the game and we are much better than we showed."

Hull are fifth in the Championship after four matches this season.
