Hull City manager Steve Bruce has said that Jake Livermore has "let himself down" after the midfielder tested positive for cocaine.
Livermore has been suspended by Hull and could face a two-year ban if his second sample also tests positive.
"We're all let down, everybody concerned with the club, and everybody concerned with football. We're all let down," Bruce told the Daily Mail.
"But the biggest one he's let down is a blossoming career. He's let himself down. Being tarnished with that [drug use] is awful and he'll have to live with the consequences of that."
Livermore signed for Hull from Tottenham Hotspur last summer for a then club-record transfer fee.
