Hull City caretaker boss Mike Phelan admits that he has had "no communication" with the club regarding their search for a successor to Steve Bruce.

Hull City caretaker boss Mike Phelan has admitted that he has had "no communication" from the club as to the current managerial situation.

Phelan is in temporary charge of the newly-promoted Tigers after Steve Bruce stepped down last month, but Hull's attempts to find a permanent replacement before the start of the new season have so far been unsuccessful.

The FAW is understood to have rejected an approach for Chris Coleman, while another rumoured target, Roberto Martinez, has since taken over Belgium, and Phelan admits that he is unsure whether he will be in charge for the visit of defending champions Leicester City on the opening weekend of the season.

"As it stands at the moment, I possibly might be in charge against Leicester but you never know what a day can bring in football. I've had no communication. I'm just thinking out loud really. I'm contracted to this football club and I've done what has been asked of me and I'm sure there'll have to be some sort of discussion going into the week," he told the Hull Daily Mail.

"There's nothing different on my position. It's just a case of doing my job and that's all I can do until other people tell us what the next move is. I wouldn't say this has been my worst pre-season because you always take something from it, but it's certainly been a disruptive one.

"But for me it's been reasonably comfortable because I've just done my job. I was asked to take the team in pre-season, prepare them, and along with the staff we've got left we've all conducted ourselves really well. We move forward now and see what the week brings."

Former West Ham United and Watford manager Gianfranco Zola has also been linked with the vacant post at the KC Stadium.
