Noel Hunt scores in stoppage time to give Ipswich Town a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

Noel Hunt scored in stoppage time on his first appearance since rejoining Ipswich Town to give the team a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic in the Championship this afternoon.

The visitors looked lively in the opening 10 minutes as Hunt tried to set up Paul Anderson with a cross to the edge of the box, but Nick Pope was left with a comfortable save to deny Ipswich an opening goal.

Charlton soon started to dominate the possession, with Igor Vetokele creating their first real chance of the afternoon by heading the ball forward for Callum Harriott, but Bartosz Bialkowski got a hand to it.

The visitors tried to create something on the counter-attack when Bialkowski launched the ball clear after a Morgan Fox effort, allowing Daryl Murphy to get a shot away down the other end, but it did not find the back of the net.

Charlton continued to push in the final minutes of the half though, as Francis Coquelin attempted to slice the ball in from a tight angle, while Chris Solly smashed a shot straight at the keeper just before the break, but neither managed to open the scoring.

The visitors made a bright start to the second half, but David McGoldrick and Tyrone Mings both wasted their chances with wide shots.

Murphy came close as the Tractor Boys continued to look sharp, but Pope just managed to tip it behind for a corner, which was swiftly dealt with.

McGoldrick was in again with just over 20 minutes to play after Luke Chambers curled a free kick in towards him, but Pope continued to frustrate the visitors.

Charlton started to look dangerous again inside the final 15 minutes as they tried to force a late winner, but Vetokele's finish was blocked before Harriott drifted offside while awaiting a Fox through-ball.

It looked like the sides would be finishing level, but Hunt found the bottom corner deep into stoppage time with a powerful low finish to steal all three points for the visitors.

The defeat is Charlton's first at The Valley in the Championship this season, leaving them ninth in the table, while Ipswich climb up to second.
