England end their European Under-21 Championship campaign without a win as they are beaten 1-0 by the hosts Israel on Tuesday.

England have ended their European Under-21 Championship campaign with a third successive defeat following a 1-0 loss to the hosts Israel on Tuesday.

Israel entered the match knowing that they would need a six-goal swing in Group A if they were to overhaul Norway and claim second position behind Italy, but England had already been eliminated.

Spurred on by a lively home crowd, it was Israel that made the more positive start to proceedings with Munas Dabbur and Ofir Krieff both spurning half-chances in the opening five minutes of action.

Thomas Ince had the first real chance of the evening after 12 minutes, but somehow the Blackpool winger failed to make contact on a cross from Jonjo Shelvey, with the ball moving harmlessly out of play.

Israel Zaguri was next to come close for the home side, but his effort was blocked by Tom Lees at the final moment, before Krieff fired high and wide of the crossbar with 17 minutes on the clock.

Sintayehu Sallalich had a half-chance moments later on the break, but Luke Steele was down to make a smart save at his near post.

Ince had another half-chance after 30 minutes following good work from Shelvey, but the winger's effort was blocked at the final moment, before Shelvey fired wide moments later.

Danny Rose was next to come close from inside the box, but the Tottenham Hotspur defender could only strike wide of the target. The chances continued to arrive for England with Wilfried Zaha and Ince having attempts, but both were denied by Boris Kleyman.

Connor Wickham had a half-chance for England in the early stages of the second period, but his powerful effort from close range was smothered by two defenders.

Wickham and Zaha continued to cause problems to the Israel defence as the half began to gather pace, but the home side were a threat on the break with the stadium driving them forward.

Israel's first attempt of the second period arrived from Nir Biton when the skipper struck an effort from outside the box, but it thumped against the crossbar.

The chances continued to arrive for the home side as Ofer Verta struck an effort from a wide position with 61 minutes on the clock, but it was always moving wide of Steele's post.

Zaguri almost caught Steele off his line moments later, but the Middlesbrough goalkeeper was able to palm it away at the vital moment, before Omri Altman fired a low cross along the goal-line.

Shelvey had an effort from distance with 15 minutes remaining, but it was always moving high and wide of the crossbar, before Marvin Sordell volleyed into the stands five minutes later.

Krieff found the winner moments later, however, with the attacker curling an effort into the bottom corner to condemn England to yet another defeat, but it was not enough to book a spot in the semi-finals.
