Chris Pontius's 93rd-minute strike secured DC United a 1-0 victory against defending MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy.
In a cagey opening period, the first chance of note fell to Pontius, whose close-range strike on 38 minutes was inches away from nestling in Brian Rowe's net.
The Galaxy almost found a goal of their own on the stroke of half time when Alan Gordon's header was stopped by Bill Hamid, before the DC stopper was called into action again to keep out Baggio Husidic's injury-time effort.
Los Angeles finished strongly, with Juninho seeing his late strike go narrowly wide and Gordon missing the target with another header.
Jose Villarreal then saw his left-footed drive from the edge of the area tipped away by Hamid as the visitors provided the greater attacking threat in the dying stages.
However, it was left to Pontius to snatch victory for the hosts three minutes into injury time, slotting home after latching onto Nick DeLeon's pass.
