Third-placed Lazio had two men sent off as they slumped to a shock 3-1 defeat at home to Bologna.
The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead after only 28 minutes thanks to goals from Daniele Portanova and Alessandro Diamanti.
Lazio were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Francelino Matuzalem was shown a straight red card when his flailing arm caught an opponent.
The hosts were allowed back into the match on 56 minutes courtesy of Matteo Rubin's own goal.
However, their night got worse soon after when Alvaro Gonzalez was sent off for denying Bologna a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The away side's two-goal cushion was restored minutes later as Rene Krhin found the net.
