Lazio have missed out on the chance to climb into the Serie A European places after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Genoa in this evening's clash at the Stadio Olimpico.
The hosts fashioned the first concrete effort of the game when Lucas Biglia struck the post in the seventh minute from a free kick.
Antonio Candreva then forced a save from Genoa's goalkeeper after Dusan Basta set him on his way with a smart through-ball.
The visitors, however, soon found themselves with a great chance to open the scoring after Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti was shown a red card just before the half-hour mark.
Diego Perotti stepped up and duly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner past substitute stopper Etrit Berisha.
Genoa were the better side after going ahead, Iago Falque troubling the home side's defence on a number of occasions.
However, Lazio nearly levelled proceedings midway through the second half when Miroslav Klose's headed flick-on was blasted against the post by Stefano Mauri.
The visitors were ultimately able to see the game out and secure all three points, which sees them climb to seventh in Serie A, two points behind sixth-placed Lazio.
