Doncaster Rovers reach the second round of the League Cup by seeing off local rivals Leeds United 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers have reached the second round of the League Cup by seeing off local rivals Leeds United 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a hotly-contested derby at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Uwe Rosler's charges opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark when Mirco Antenucci cut inside from the left and forced a save from Thorsten Stuckmann.

The ball then rebounded into the path of Lewis Cook, who was on hand to tap it into an empty net for his first goal for the club.

Donny, however, were given the chance to equalise after Scott Wootton had bundled Cedric Evina over in the area, prompting the referee to award the hosts a penalty.

Andy Williams stepped up to the spot and, despite Ross Turnbull going the right way, couldn't quite stop the shot squirming in.

Leeds made things harder for themselves still when, on 38 minutes, Cook overran the ball and went in two-footed on defender Aaron Taylor-Sinclair to earn himself a straight red card.

The hosts were invigorated after the restart as they pushed forward and forced their opponents into the final third, Williams nearly doubling his tally just before the hour with a shot that was well saved by Turnbull.

Charlie Taylor was then responsible for a tackle in the box on Nathan Tyson after the veteran forward had motored his way into the area with just 10 minutes to go.

Neither side could be separated by the full-time whistle, so both sets of increasingly tired players had to endure another 30 minutes of football.

Antenucci came closest to proving the difference between the two competitors as he dribbled into the area and created some space for a shot that Stuckmann fumbled onto the post before grabbing it before it could cross the line.

Not even extra time could separate the teams on the Keepmoat pitch, so the game had to go to penalties, the first of which was a perfectly-struck effort from Antenucci that sent the keeper the wrong way.

Tyson was up next, his powerful shot rippling the back of the net, before Luke Murphy's short run-up crept underneath the bar. Williams, who scored in normal time, also converted, whereas Sam Byram blasted over the bar to give Doncaster the advantage.

Forrester was up next, firing it to his left, before Chris Wood also failed for Leeds with another missed penalty, leaving Richie Wellens to put the visitors out of their misery with a spot-on shot to put Doncaster into the second round.
