Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Liverpool Women and Manchester City Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Manchester City Women will look to claim a fifth consecutive victory in all competitions when they travel to Anfield for Sunday's clash with Liverpool Women.

The visitors are sitting top of the Women's Super League table, while the Reds head into the weekend in fifth position.

Match preview

Liverpool Women are one of five teams yet to lose a WSL game this season, having won one and drawn two of their three league matches.

While they may be unbeaten in the WSL, the Reds would have been frustrated to draw 1-1 against Leicester City and West Ham United, especially as they took the lead in both of those encounters.

Matt Beard's side went on to lose 2-0 in their Women's League Cup opener against rivals Manchester United, leaving them without a win in their first three competitive matches of the season.

Fortunately for the Reds, they managed to end their wait for a win with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Cornelia Kapocs and Marie Hobinger both saw their efforts cancelled out, before the latter netted a 95th-minute penalty to snatch all three points.

Impressively, Liverpool have now won five and drawn two of their previous seven WSL outings, however, they will be fully aware that their most recent league defeat was a 4-1 loss to Man City in March's home encounter.

Man City will head into Sunday's fixture in a confident mood after winning five of their six competitive matches this season.

The Citizens claimed two Women's Champions qualifying victories against Paris FC on either side of a 2-2 draw in their WSL clash with Arsenal.

Gareth Taylor's side went on to beat Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United, before they produced a sensational performance to claim a 2-0 victory over reigning European champions Barcelona.

Naomi Layzell and Khadija Shaw both got on the scoresheet to help Man City record a fourth consecutive home win without conceding.

After playing four home games on the bounce, the Citizens will head on their travels with hopes of extending their unbeaten away league run to nine matches.

Impressively, Man City have won eight of those nine away games, and they may fancy their chances of claiming another win on the road after winning 11 of their last 12 head-to-head meetings in the WSL.

Team News

Liverpool midfielder Sofie Lundgaard is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first half of last Sunday's game against Tottenham.

The Reds could also be without the services of Teagan Micah, Grace Fisk, Faye Kirby and Ceri Holland due to injury.

Sophie Roman Haug and Olivia Smith have scored a goal apiece this season, and they will be keen to add to their respective tallies when they feature in the front two against Man City.

As for the visitors, they remain without goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and Risa Shimizu due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Layzell will have to be assessed after she limped off in the closing stages of Wednesday's Women's Champions League win.

Taylor may take the opportunity to freshen up his side following the energy-sapping win over Barcelona, with the likes of Leila Ouahabi, Jill Roord and Chloe Kelly all in contention to start against Liverpool.

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Evans, Bonner, Matthews; Parry, Hobinger, Nagano, Kapocs, Hinds; Smith, Haug

Manchester City Women possible starting lineup:
Yamashita; Casparij, Aleixandri, Greenwood, Ouahabi; Park, Hasegawa, Roord; Kelly, Hemp, Shaw

We say: Liverpool Women 1-2 Manchester City Women

Liverpool have enough talent in their ranks to cause Man City one or two problems, but the visitors usually perform well on their travels, and we think that they will edge out their hosts to record a ninth win in 10 WSL away matches.
