How Liverpool could line up against Ajax

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Liverpool could line up for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Ajax.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will hope to welcome back Darwin Nunez, Thiago Alcantara and Ibrahima Konate to his matchday squad for their match against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.

A draw would ensure that the Reds progress to the knockout stages of the competition for the sixth successive season under Klopp's management, but a defeat would mean heading into their final match in Group A against Napoli next week still needing a positive result in order to progress to the next round.

As such, the 55-year-old will want as many of his key players on the pitch as possible, although Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Joel Matip will not be available due to injury.

Nunez, Thiago and Konate were all absent from Liverpool's travelling squad for the 1-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday, but Klopp revealed that Nunez "should be back" for the trip to Amsterdam despite being withdrawn due to a minor hamstring complaint against West Ham United last week.

Thiago was a late withdrawal at the weekend due to an ear infection, and will miss out again on Wednesday, while Konate has returned to training after a muscle strain and could replace Joe Gomez alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was a second-half substitute at the City Ground and will almost certainly replace James Milner at right-back, with Andrew Robertson likely to keep his place on the other side of the defence given the importance of Wednesday's tie.

Likewise, club captain Jordan Henderson did not start on Saturday and should come in here to provide much needed experience and energy in the middle of the park, with Nunez, Harvey Elliott, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah potentially forming a fluid front four.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have both returned to training following long-term muscle injuries, but neither were included in Liverpool's Champions League squad and will therefore not be involved in Amsterdam.

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho; Elliott, Firmino, Nunez; Salah body check tags ::
