Liverpool goalkeeper Adam Bogdan has insisted that there is "method in the madness" when it comes to penalty shootouts.
The Reds managed to win their Capital One Cup tie over League Two's Carlisle United at Anfield on Wednesday night, but they were pushed to penalties.
Danny Ings scored the opener in the 24th minute, but Derek Asamoah struck 12 minutes later to level terms in normal time.
Neither side could grab the winner in extra time, but Liverpool eventually progressed into the fourth round with a 3-2 win in the shootout after Bogdan saved three of Carlisle's five penalties.
"There's method in the madness," the goalkeeper told the club's official website. "Sometimes you guess right, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. I guessed the right way and got lucky with three shots. Thankfully we went through.
"I think we played well and did everything to win the game. On another day, our shots would go in and we would have had a more comfortable night. Of course, the main thing was to go through."
The Reds will take on Eddie Howe's Bournemouth at Anfield in the next round.
