Rafael Benitez urges Liverpool to build on last season's second-place finish

Rafael Benitez urges Liverpool to focus on the positives of last season's second-place finish in the Premier League following their inconsistent start to this campaign.

Napoli manager Rafael Benitez believes that Liverpool need to focus on what they can improve on as opposed to the disappointment of missing out on the Premier League title last season.

Brendan Rodgers's side came close to clinching their first title in 24 years, but finished two points behind champions Manchester City.

This season, the Merseyside outfit have had a stuttering start having won just four games out of 11, which has left them 11th in the Premier League table.

During Benitez's time in charge at Anfield, in the 2008-09 campaign, Liverpool finished second behind Manchester United, but dropped to seventh the following season.

"You have to have this experience and say 'what can we do now?'," Benitez told Sky Sports News. "We cannot change what happened so we have to think 'what can we do for the future? How can we be in the same position?' So I think that's the only thing.

"When we finished second I was really pleased because we had 86 points and it still was not enough and everyone went 'oh you lost an opportunity'. So if you continue moaning about 'oh we lost an opportunity' you will not be ready for the future. So I think you have to concentrate on what you did well, what you did badly and then try to improve for the future, for the next one."

Benitez, who left Liverpool in 2010 after six years at the club, has hinted that he will return to Merseyside in the future because his wife and children still live in the city.
