Dalglish expresses confidence in Cole

Kenny Dalglish suggests that Joe Cole’s goal on Saturday could prove to be a turning point.

Kenny Dalglish has commented that Joe Cole’s performance last Saturday could affect his future at his club.

Since being acquired on free transfer from Chelsea nine months ago, Cole has rarely found himself on Liverpool’s first team. His expense - £90,000 per week- and lack of contribution on the pitch has led many to assume that Dalglish might seek to let him go this summer. Both Spurs and his former club West Ham are thought to have shown an interest.

However, Cole’s goal against Birmingham as a substitute on Saturday has earned praise from manager Dalglish.

“Joe’s goal wasn’t a little contribution,” he said. “It could be massive for him, because he has not had as many opportunities as he would have like as he’s been injured and suspended.”

Although not specifically addressing Cole’s Anfield future, the Scot insisted that Cole had performed well under the circumstances. “He’s had a difficult time, but it is a great credit to him the way he has been training and working every single day,” he explained.

“He’s not let it affect him and that’s all I can ask for - for anyone when they do get their chance to go on and do their best. He is fantastic in training. He plays everything right and doesn’t have a problem.”

Liverpool’s next game will be a midday meeting with Newcastle on Sunday.
