Steven Gerrard: 'Manchester City win was a statement'

Steven Gerrard says that Liverpool flashed their title credentials by beating Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield today.

Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool flashed their title credentials by beating Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield today.

First-half strikes from Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel were cancelled out by David Silva and a Glen Johnson own goal after the restart.

However, Philippe Coutinho struck with 12 minutes remaining to fire the Merseysiders five points clear of second-placed Chelsea in the Premier League, while Johnson was red-carded in the closing stages.

Next stop for the Reds en route to ending their 24-year wait for the league title is a visit to Norwich City, and Gerrard believes that the trip to Carrow Road represents a bigger test than the one they passed this afternoon.

"It's emotional but we need to stay calm as we still have four big games to come - but that meant so much, especially when they came back," he told reporters.

"That is probably the biggest statement we have made so far. It was the longest 90 minutes I have probably played in. It felt like the clock was going backwards during parts of that game.

"We have got four cup games left. People said that was the biggest one was Manchester City but I disagree, the big one now is Norwich. Nothing is ours yet."

Chelsea can cut the deficit to two points once again if they beat Swansea City today.
