How Liverpool could line up against Burnley

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up for Thursday night's Premier League meeting with Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool will be looking to end a four-match Premier League winless run which stretches back to before Christmas when they host relegation-threatened Burnley at Anfield on Thursday night.

The champions have taken just three points from the last 12 offer and have failed to even score in their last three league outings, most recently playing out a stalemate with leaders Manchester United on Sunday.

That result saw Liverpool drop to fourth in the Premier League table, but they will be firm favourites to get back on form when they face a Burnley side sitting just one place above the relegation zone.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Jurgen Klopp could line his side up for Thursday's contest.

Out: Naby Keita (muscle), Virgil van Dijk (knee), Joe Gomez (knee), Diogo Jota (knee), Kostas Tsimikas (knee)
Doubtful: Joel Matip (adductor)

Liverpool should be boosted by the return of Joel Matip for this match, with the centre-back now back in training after his latest injury setback.

Matip only narrowly missed out against Man United on Sunday and so is likely to be thrown straight back into the starting lineup for this one, allowing captain Jordan Henderson to return to midfield too.

Xherdan Shaqiri looked sharp on a rare appearance in that match but he could drop out of the starting XI for this one, with Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner among the midfielders pushing for starts.

Thiago Alcantara should retain his place after a classy display for much of the Man United game, but Georginio Wijnaldum could be rested as Klopp looks to keep his squad fresh wherever possible.

Klopp would no doubt like the opportunity to rest one of his misfiring front three too, particularly with Man United waiting again in the FA Cup at the weekend, but Liverpool's league position and Diogo Jota's continued absence mean that he is unlikely to risk doing so.

Mohamed Salah is currently enduring his second-longest goal drought as a Liverpool player - although that is still only four games - while Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have both found chances hard to come by in recent weeks too.

Mane and Firmino do both have good records against Burnley, though, each scoring four goals in their four previous league meetings with the Clarets as Liverpool players.

This game is again expected to come too soon for Naby Keita, while Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas are also still sidelined.
