Liverpool's Premier League story is one of underachievement and near-misses, with one of Europe's greatest clubs yet to lift the trophy 25 years after its inception.
The most successful team prior to the advent of the Premier League in 1992, the Reds have failed to add to their haul of 18 top-flight titles since 1990 and have now been knocked off their perch by fierce rivals Manchester United.
The closest Liverpool have come to ending that long wait for number 19 has been runner-up finishes in 2001-02, 2008-09 and, most recently, 2013-14.
Having finished inside the top two in 18 of the 19 seasons prior to the Premier League, it represents a remarkable tail-off in form since the new era began, but Liverpool fans will be hoping that Jurgen Klopp is the man to bring the top-flight trophy back to Anfield.
To celebrate 25 years of the competition, here is Sports Mole's countdown of Liverpool's 25 greatest Premier League players.
