Thomas Tuchel's side did indeed bag maximum points in front of their own supporters with a 2-1 victory.
Nicolai Muller and Andreas Ivanschitz put Mainz 2-0 up after just 21 minutes, but Per Nilsson halved the deficit five minutes from the half-time interval.
Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline in the second half, but the match eventually ended in favour of the hosts.

Mainz looking the better of the two sides in the last two minutes, as they have created two moves that have troubled the Nuremberg defence.
Muller earns a corner as he cuts inside from the right flank and has to be dispossessed in the final minute. He has looked very lively and very good in the opening minutes of the match.
GOAL Nicolai Muller scores and makes it 1-0 to Mainz! He gets the ball on the right flank, runs past his marker, gets inside the Nuremberg penalty box and shoots past Peter Rakovsky.
Muller has been the most prominent player on the pitch so far in this game and his goal is well taken as well. However, you do have to ask questions of the Nuremberg defence.
YELLOW CARD The first caution of the match is given to Per Nilsson.
The Mainz supporters are in loud voice at the ground, as they are cheering their side for the second goal of the evening.
I have not seen much of Adam Szalai in this game. He is the joint topscorer in the German Bundesliga with eight goals, remember.
Timothy Chandler is down injured just on the edge of Nuremberg's penalty area following a challenge with Andreas Ivanschitz. The medics are in, and hopefully he will be back on his feet soon.

Tomas Pekhart goes close for Nuremberg! Hiroshi Kiyotak gallops down the right flank and floats in a cross that Pekhart heads towards goal, but fails to keep it on target.
Christian Wetklo is forced to make a brilliant save between the Mainz posts, as Hiroshi Kiyotake takes an attempt from outside the box. That was a great curling shot from Kiyotake.
The visitors come close again! Kiyotake delivers a great ball that Per Nilsson heads towards the Mainz goal, but cannot keep it on target. Nuremberg are looking very dangerous at the moment.
Just an update on the yellow card situations. Mainz's Junior Diaz and Nuremberg's Marvin Plattenhardt have been shown yellow cards in the last three or so minutes.
Goal Nuremberg have finally scored and have halved the deficit. Kiyotake floats in a great delivery from a corner that Nilsson rises above his marker to powerfully head home.
Four minutes left for the first half to end, and the match is now delicately poised. Nuremberg have been asking questions of the Mainz defence since the half-hour mark and, I have to say, they deservedly scored their first goal of the evening.
Kiyotake is on fire tonight! He cuts inside from the right and shoots on the Mainz goal from outside the penalty area, but fails to keep his shot on target.
The referee blows the half-time whistle and brings an end to the first-half action.
It is 2-1 to Mainz at half-time at the Coface Arena. Nicolai Muller scored for the hosts in the 12th minute and Andreas Ivanschitz doubled their advantage on 21 minutes. However, Nuremberg refused to give up and came back strongly in the final 15 minutes of the half, and deservedly pulled one back through Per Nilsson on 40 minutes.
The second half will start in a matter of minutes. Mainz lead 2-1 at home from the first half.

I think that is the first time I have seen Szalai take a proper attempt on goal in this match. He is in a red-hot form at the moment, so Nuremberg need to keep him under check.
End-to-end stuff here, as this time Marvin Plattenhardt shoots on the Mainz goal from a narrow angle from the left, but Wetklo claims the ball with ease.
This is turning out to be yet another superbly entertaining Bundesliga match. At one point Nuremberg seemed dead and buried, but they are now causing Mainz all sorts of problems at the moment.
Nuremberg are forging their attacks down the left flank. Mainz need to be careful on that flank.
Another great chance for the visitors to make it 2-2, as Timothy Chandler floats in a cross from the right flank, but the Mainz defence eventually clear the danger away.
MAINZ HIT THE CROSSBAR! Nicolai Muller floats in a good corner that Jan Kirchhoff powerfully heads towards the Nuremberg goal, but it comes off the crossbar. Oh, that could have been 3-1 to the hosts.
