James Milner: 'We weren't at our best'

James Milner admits that Manchester City were far from their best in their 1-1 draw with Roma on Tuesday evening.

Manchester City midfielder James Milner has admitted that the side were not at their best as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League.

City took an early lead through Sergio Aguero's penalty, but Francesco Totti hit back for Rudi Garcia's men to become the oldest scorer in Champions League history at the age of 38.

Milner, who came off the bench in the second half, accepted that the team were too slow in the final third, but gave credit to the defensive organisation of the Giallorossi.

"Maybe we could have won it, but we didn't play our best in the game, we know that," Milner told ITV Sport. "We created a few chances and could have nicked it but we never got up to our speed.

"That's one of our strengths when we move the ball quickly and there is movement everywhere and teams find it hard to deal with. We moved it quickly and obviously they're a well organised team, and they're used to doing that so we didn't quite do enough to win the game.

"I think it was mainly tempo [that was the problem]. First half we never got going and I think Lamps (Frank Lampard) coming on maybe helped us in midfield."

City meet CSKA Moscow in Russia in their next Champions League tie.
