Manchester City have revealed that Leroy Sane will undergo a knee operation "in the coming week" after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Liverpool in the Community Shield.
The 23-year-old, who has been strongly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer, picked up the injury in the early stages of the clash in London.
Bayern Munich were said to be confident of completing a deal for the Germany international before the transfer window closes, but Sane now requires an operation which will keep him out for an extended period.
"[Sane] has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury," read a statement on City's official website.
"Leroy will have surgery in the coming week. Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the Club wishes him a quick and full recovery."
The left-sided attacker has entered the final two years of his contract with Pep Guardiola's side.
