Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola explains reason for naming six substitutes

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reveals that he only named six substitutes for the Premier League encounter with Burnley due to a reserve team fixture.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that the scheduling of a youth team fixture led to just six substitutes being named for the Premier League fixture with Burnley.

City have a number of players sidelined through injury and illness, with John Stones, Benjamin Mendy, Fabian Delph, Phil Foden, David Silva, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus all unavailable for the trip to Turf Moor.

Guardiola has received criticism for attempting to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City rather than showing more faith in the club's academy players at a time when the club sit 15 points clear of the Premier League standings, but the Spaniard has insisted that failing to select seven replacements is not a response to any comments.

The 47-year-old told Sky Sports News: "We don't have any more. That is the reason why. One goalkeeper and five players.

"We could take one from the second team but they had a game yesterday. We don't have any more."

On Friday, Burnley boss Sean Dyche claimed that the demands of the Premier League were why Guardiola was not using more academy players.
