Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard has revealed that manager Louis van Gaal told the players to "ignore" the supporters during their Champions League match against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The crowd were heard chanting "attack, attack, attack" during the match, which looked as though it would be United's fourth consecutive goalless draw until Wayne Rooney scored in the 79th minute.
Lingard, who made the assist for the goal, told reporters: "I was trying to be as direct as I could and get the crowd on their feet. Obviously I had to be direct at the right time, so we had to be patient sometimes. I'm glad the goal came."
When asked what advice Van Gaal had given at half time, Lingard said: "Just to keep going and perform the same as the first half. Be patient, ignore the fans and keep playing your own game."
United top Group B by one point.
