Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich: Previous meetings

Ahead of their encounter tomorrow night, Sports Mole looks back over the nine previous meetings between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

Tomorrow evening, Manchester United face the daunting prospect of taking on holders Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The two sides have met each other on nine previous occasions, one of which came during the 1999 final.

Below, Sports Mole has looked back over each of those encounters, with Bayern currently leading 3-2 on the head to head record.

1. Bayern 2-2 Man United, September 1998
When these two were drawn together in the same group, it was seen as a straight battle as to who would qualify for the knockout stages along with Barcelona. Giovane Elber put the hosts 1-0 up early on, but goals either side of the break from Dwight Yorke and Paul Scholes sent United 2-1 in front. It appeared that they were going to hold out for all three points, but in the 89th minute, Peter Schmeichel misjudged a long throw from Bixente Lizarazu, which handed Elber the opportunity to head in a late equaliser.

2. Man United 1-1 Bayern, December 1998
A draw ensured that both sides would advance at Barca's expense and despite a nervy evening at Old Trafford, that's exactly what happened. Captain Roy Keane fired United in front in the 43rd minute, but Bayern hit back after the restart through Hasan Salihamidzic. These two teams would meet again just a few months later.

3. Man United 2-1 Bayern, May 1999
The final that prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to say: "Football, bloody hell." An early goal from Mario Basler sent Bayern 1-0 up and although the German team spurned a host of opportunities, as the match ticked into stoppage time, it appeared that they were going to get their hands on the famous trophy for a fourth time. United substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had other ideas, though, as both scored to give their side a dramatic victory.

4. Man United 0-1 Bayern, April 2001
Revenge was the buzz word when these two sides were paired together in the 2001 quarter-finals and Bayern gained it. Both teams had wasted opportunities before Brazilian winger Paulo Sergio popped up inside the area to guide an effort beyond the reach of Fabien Barthez.

5. Bayern 2-1 Man United, April 2001
Needing to win the second leg to reach the semi-finals, it couldn't have been a worse start for United. Elber scored with just five minutes on the clock and when Mehmet Scholl made it 2-0, the tie was out of the Premier League team's reach. Ryan Giggs did pull one goal back, but it was little more than a consolation effort from the Welshman.

8. Bayern 2-1 Man United, March 2010
Wayne Rooney volleyed United in front with just 66 seconds on the clock, but the English outfit failed to build upon that advantage. Instead, Bayern applied large amounts of pressure and ensured that they would take a 2-1 advantage into the second leg thanks to goals from Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic.

9. Man United 3-2 Bayern, April 2010

Trailing 2-1, United raced out of the traps on home soil with a goal from Darron Gibson and a brace scored by Nani putting them 3-0 up within the opening 41 minutes. The tide started to turn, though, when Olic scored two minutes before the break. Then, after the restart, United full-back Rafael da Silva was red carded and Bayern made their numerical advantage count as Arjen Robben scored from distance, sending his team through on the away goals rule.
