Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane has said that "confidence" and "discipline" have helped the Red Devils evolve as a team during the 2022-23 campaign.

The 20-time English champions are still competing for four trophies this season, with the team looking for success in the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Man United will face Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final this weekend, but their immediate focus is on the Europa League, as they prepare to welcome Barcelona for the second leg of their knockout round playoff on Thursday, with the tie delicately poised following a 2-2 draw last week.

When asked about Man United's improvement this term under Erik ten Hag's management, Varane used the words "confidence" and "discipline" to explain the team's form.

"I think first of all it is the confidence. Secondly, it is discipline. Tactically we know exactly how we want to play, to manage the game," the Frenchman told reporters during Wednesday's press conference.

"With a little bit more experience and the mentality of competition we have already improved a lot, and that is maybe the difference.

"I think the first game against Barcelona was a very good game, top level, two offensive teams who want to press high on the pitch.

"The level was good, it was a good result for us. We could have scored more goals, but we played with character and personality on the pitch.

"We want to play with patience, discipline, patience on the pitch. We are ready for that challenge.

"I think on the last month we grow a lot. I think we are playing with more confidence and tomorrow the atmosphere will be electric. We have to manage our emotions, be calm and believe. The next aim is to beat teams like Barcelona. It is a real challenge and a good opportunity."

Varane was also asked about Barcelona's trio of absences, with Ousmane Dembele and Pedri missing out through injury, while Gavi is suspended for Xavi's side.

"Obviously they are important absences. But Barcelona have a big squad. We have to be prepared to compete. They can bring players in who can come in. We have to play the same, or even better to qualify," he added.

Varane, who recently retired from international duty with France, has been a key player for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign, making 21 appearances in all competitions. body check tags ::
