Manchester United suffered Europa League final heartache on Wednesday evening as Villarreal won the trophy courtesy of an incredible 11-10 victory in the penalty shootout.

The two teams could not be separated at the end of 120 minutes, as Edinson Cavani's second-half effort cancelled out a close-range finish from Gerard Moreno.

However, a high-quality penalty shootout ended when David de Gea saw his effort saved by opposing goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who had just arrowed one into the top corner of the net.

Man United had the better of the opening 20 minutes, with Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw both having attempts from distance, but it was Villarreal that took the lead in the 29th minute.

Indeed, a deep free kick from Dani Parejo was expertly guided into the back of the net by Moreno, who had managed to escape the attention of Victor Lindelof to send the Spanish side ahead.

Man United had a half-chance to level late in the first period when Mason Greenwood delivered a dangerous low cross into the Villarreal area, but the ball hit Raul Albiol before Rulli managed to gather.

The English side were level in the 55th minute, though, when Cavani converted from close range after the ball had broken kindly for the Uruguay international following a strike from Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils dominated the ball in the spell that followed, with Cavani coming close once again 20 minutes from time, as the striker's goal-bound header was blocked by Pau Torres.

McTominay was often the player driving Man United forward in the second half, but the two teams could not be separated at the end of the 90 minutes, meaning that extra-time was required.

Villarreal had the better of the first half of extra time, with Alberto Moreno and Paco Alcacer both having half-chances for the La Liga outfit, but the contest ultimately headed for a penalty shootout, which the Yellow Submarine won 11-10 to secure European silverware.

MAN OF THE MATCH - PAU TORRES

It is not difficult to see why Pau Torres is so highly rated, as the Villarreal centre-back put in an excellent performance over the course of 120 minutes, before netting in the shootout.

Man United, as well as Real Madrid, are said to be admirers of the Spain international, who made a number of important blocks and looked a player in total control as he led from the back.

STANDOUT MOMENT

An stunning penalty shootout came to an end in the most dramatic of fashions as De Gea saw his attempt saved by opposing goalkeeper Rulli, who had himself just picked out the top corner.

It was a high-quality shootout between the two teams, but it just was not to be for De Gea, who now faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford heading into this summer's European Championships with Spain.
