The Football Association has confirmed that it will investigate why a laser was directed at Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney during the League Cup penalty shootout with Middlesbrough.
Replays showed that a green light was shone in the face of the United captain as he prepared to take his penalty following extra time at Old Trafford.
Boro goalkeeper Tomas Mejias saved Rooney's effort as United were beaten 3-1 in the shootout following a goalless draw after 120 minutes.
The FA has stated that it has been made aware of reports of the incident and will now look into the matter.
The shootout took place at the end of the ground where 10,000 away fans were housed, although it is not clear where the laser was shone from.
