How Manchester United could line up against Luton Town

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up in Tuesday's EFL Cup third-round clash with Luton Town.

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's Premier League loss to Crystal Palace when they face Luton Town in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Palace in their opening league game of the 2020-21 season, with Wilfried Zaha scoring twice against his former club, including a controversial penalty.

The Red Devils will not view the EFL Cup as a priority this season but will be desperate to put a win on the board ahead of their next league game away to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Luton, though, have already won twice in this competition this term, while they have also started their Championship campaign with two straight victories and will therefore be full of confidence.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how United could line up at Kenilworth Road.

Solskjaer will make changes from the clash with Palace on Saturday, and there should be a first-team debut for Dean Henderson, who has returned to the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Sheffield United.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nemanja Matic did not feature against Roy Hodgson's side due to lack of fitness, but the pair should come in for this game, while Eric Bailly and Brandon Williams are likely to earn starts at the back.

Further forward, Fred was on the bench against the Eagles and could feature alongside Matic, while Donny van de Beek should make his full debut after coming off the bench to score on Saturday.

Daniel James could be handed a spot on the left, having struggled off the right against Palace, which would allow Mason Greenwood to come in for a start on the opposite side.

There is also expected to be a start in attack for Odion Ighalo, who is yet to score a Premier League goal for the club but has managed five goals in the cup competitions.

Club captain Harry Maguire is likely to keep his spot at the back in order to build fitness, especially considering that Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are still injured, while Chris Smalling will not be considered due to the speculation surrounding his future.

There is likely to be a spot in the squad for 18-year-old centre-back Teden Mengi, while Jesse Lingard, who is currently being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, could also be among the substitutes.
