Hello everyone! The important games begin in just over two weeks, but before then Premier League sides continue their respective world tours and
Manchester United take centre stage at the Avaya Stadium today as they take on
San Jose Earthquakes. Can
Louis van Gaal's side pick up another pre-season win?
Van Gaal's focus is of course on fitness and the preparations for the new campaign, but this is their second match of the International Champions Cup, in which they currently sit in fourth spot. A win could take up to second behind LA Galaxy, who meet Barcelona tonight.
Retirement isn't too bad, hey Fergie?
TEAM NEWS: Van Gaal has named the same side which started the victory over Club America, with
Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney, and
Morgan Schneiderlin all starting. Full teams to come soon.
Van Gaal claimed in his pre-match press conference that his players are in for a tough physical test this evening against a side who finished bottom of the Western Conference in MLS last season.
"Of course I think that we are at a higher level than San Jose Earthquakes but they are fit and they have played many matches," said van Gaal in his press conference. "We are not fit yet."
"Also the difference between San Jose and Club America is 20 centimetres. Every player is 20 centimetres taller. The corner kicks and the free-kicks are much more dangerous from San Jose Earthquakes than Club America. There are a lot of differences and the playing style is different."
The best part of pre-season for supporters is seeing new signings in action for the first time. United fans have enjoyed this summer due to the club's success in landing key targets, and Schneiderlin was quick to impress with the winner against Club America. The spotlight will be on the Frenchman, Depay, Schweinsteiger and Matteo Damian again. Are all four certain starters for the opening Premier League fixture against Spurs?
Much of this summer's headlines have been stolen by David de Gea, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid but currently looks more likely to start the season at Old Trafford. The Spanish goalkeeper will not be in action at the Avaya Stadium as he continues to recover from injury. Antonio Valencia is also absent once again.
United still have two games to play in America after this test. They will take on Champions League winners Barcelona this Saturday before concluding the tour against Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago. Results certainly don't matter at this stage, but both of those matches are likely to be tough challenges.
A quick reminder before we go any further that you can also follow live text coverage of
LA Galaxy vs. Barcelona as former Liverpool teammates Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez go head to head. Open up a couple of pages and enjoy!
Only one man has played for both Manchester United and the San Jose Earthquakes. That man is the legendary George Best. In 1982, he scored this incredible goal for the Earthquakes. It doesn't get much better.
SAN JOSE: Bingham, Wynne, Bernardez, Goodson, Stewart, Alashe, Pierazzi, Garcia, Cato, Salinas, Amarikwa
MAN UTD: Johnstone, Darmian, Jones, Blind, Shaw, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Young, Mata, Memphis, Rooney
Confirmation of the teams below shows that Daley Blind is likely to start in the centre of defence, while
Juan Mata should operate behind Wayne Rooney, who has been told that he will be spending the majority of the season as the team's central striker.
All of San Jose's players will be recognisable to regular watchers of the MLS, but for fans of the English game you may remember left-back Jordan Stewart, who played in the Premier League for Watford a few years back.
For United fans, I'm almost certain you've already seen this clip but I won't apologise for revisiting a classic Louis van Gaal press conference moment. Yesterday the Dutchman spoke to reporters alongside central defender Chris Smalling, or is it Mike Smalling?
A notable absentee from the San Jose team sheet is Chris Wondolowski, who is currently competing in the Gold Cup with the USA squad. The Earthquakes head into this game on the back of a 5-2 defeat to LA Galaxy at the weekend as Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard led the way in an impressive comeback.
My guess is that if you're following our live text coverage you weren't able to visit the Avaya Stadium, but San Jose have done their best to attract supporters to the ground tonight with the offer of a free United shirt for everyone who buys a ticket. Impressive!
If you're surprised by Van Gaal's decision to name an unchanged side, don't be. The United boss changed almost the entire team at half time against Club America, and I'm expecting more of the same in this match.
Bastian Schweinsteiger is almost certain to be given 45 minutes, while Marouane Fellaini should be involved after missing the opening match of the tour.
Tonight also gives Sam Johnstone another chance to impress Van Gaal as he looks to secure a spot as United's backup goalkeeper behind De Gea if the Spaniard stays at Old Trafford. It could be a tough task for the 22-year-old should the reports that Anders Lindegaard will not be leaving are true.
The players are out on the pitch at the Avaya Stadium. Just a few pre-match pleasantries to get out of the way before the action begins.
KICKOFF! It's United who get the game underway.
The noise is impressive inside the stadium early on. It looks like Depay is operating behind Rooney, with Young and Mata in wider positions. The Dutchman's versatility could see him shift out wide or even join Rooney further up the pitch.
Clever play from Bernardez as he finds space to loft a ball towards Stewart, who falls just short of collecting the pass in the box.
SAVE! San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham can only parry a powerful strike from Depay and Rooney is unable to latch onto the loose ball in the box. Decent start from United.
Superb play from Depay as he takes on a couple of San Jose defenders before finding Mata, who can only send his shot into the side-netting.
CHANCE! It's all United in the early stages of this game. Luke Shaw creates the latest chance as he sprints down the left before delivering a cross which looks perfect for Rooney, who is unable to add the finishing touch from close range.
Another opportunity almost falls to Rooney when a long ball forward creates problems for the San Jose defence, but Goodson recovers well to dispossess the United skipper.
Van Gaal should be pretty happy with this start from his side. They're moving the ball quickly in midfield, and the likes of Mata and Depay are getting plenty of touches.
San Jose enjoy a better spell and win a corner, but United have looks solid at the back so far and there's been very little room for the hosts to create chances in attack.
Carrick and Schneiderlin have been very, very impressive in the first half. They're controlling the tempo of the match from deeper positions, but both have shown a willingness to join their attack-minded teammates further up the pitch.
United have dominated possession since the first whistle, but there are a few signs that the Earthquakes are growing in confidence as Cato comes close to collecting a clever through ball from Quincy.
Good goalkeeping once again from Bingham as he collects a dangerous cross at the near post as United enjoy a long spell on top of the hosts.
More frustration for the visitors as Mata sees a cross blocked at the near post, before Darmian does the same just a few moments later.
GOAL! SAN JOSE 0-1 MAN UTD (MATA)
United break the deadlock after another spell of dominance. Mata doesn't appear to be attempting a shot when he sends the ball towards the back post, but the ball drifts just past Depay and into the bottom corner. Depay didn't appear to get a touch on the ball despite sticking out a leg at the end of a fine counter from United.
GOAL! SAN JOSE 0-2 MAN UTD (MEMPHIS)
Memphis missed out on adding the finishing touch a few moments ago, but he can celebrate his first goal for United now! Wynne makes the mistake at the back with a poor backpass, and the Dutchman reacts quickest to intercept before slotting past Bingham.
You've got to give a lot of credit to United. It may only be a pre-season match, but they've looked very sharp since the first whistle and Van Gaal's side are moving the ball at pace. The United boss must be pleased.
GOAL! SAN JOSE 1-2 MAN UTD (ALASHE)
Shea Salinas does well on the right wing to create space for himself before finding
Fatai Alashe, who keeps his composure under pressure from Jones to fire past a helpless Johnstone.
SAVE! Bingham makes another decent save to keep out a Young effort at the near post.
HALF TIME: SAN JOSE 1-2 MAN UTD
An entertaining first half comes to an end with United leading at the Avaya Stadium, but Van Gaal won't be entirely happy at the break. Goals from Mata and Memphis handed them a comfortable lead before Alashe brought one back just before the interval. Neither Schneiderlin or Shaw will be happy with the roles they played in allowing San Jose to find their goal.
Agree United fans? It would take a huge load off Van Gaal's mind if he those two can nail down the spots this season.
There could be as many as 10 changes at the break from Van Gaal, who is likely to remove the likes of Rooney, Mata and Memphis in the second half. For those of you still learning about Memphis. He's been one of the brightest players on the pitch so far in the number 10 role and he certainly doesn't mind dropping deeper to get involved in the build up. Could he be one of the stars of this season?
UPDATE: Barcelona are also ahead in their International Champions Cup clash. Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the first half to earn them a 1-0 lead break against LA Galaxy. Will Gerrard and co hit back?
We're back underway. United have made 10 changes.
MAN UTD: Johnstone, McNair, Smalling, Evans, Blackett, Lingard, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Pereira, Januzaj, Wilson
Schweinsteiger is already seeing plenty of the ball in the middle of the park as a youthful United XI looks to take the game to the Earthquakes early in the second half.
Andreas Pereira is playing behind lone striker James Wilson.
It's been a pretty uneventful start to the second half, which probably shouldn't come as a surprise following so many changes at the interval. Neither side have found their rhythm.
United are seeing a lot of the ball in deep positions, but they appear to be struggling with the energy shown by San Jose's replacements. After moving the ball so quickly before the break, United now look sluggish in possession.
I mentioned earlier on that Marouane Fellaini as expected to play some part, but he is still sat on the bench. Will Van Gaal take off a substitute to give the Belgian some playing time? Back on the pitch, Pereira has threatened the Earthquakes with a couple of clever runs forward.
GOAL! SAN JOSE 1-3 MAN UTD (PEREIRA)
United restore their two-goal advantage as Van Gaal's side recover from a fairly poor start to the second half from both sides. Jesse Lingard does well to create space for himself before delivering an inviting cross which is headed home by Pereira. Excellent from both youngsters.
SUBSTITUTION: San Jose make another change as goalscorer Alashe comes off to be replaced by Khari Stephenson.
Van Gaal must be delighted with what he is seeing from his young players now as Pereira and Lingard continue to regularly link up. Wilson hasn't been given much of a sniff yet, but his runs off the ball are causing problems.
San Jose have responded well to falling further behind. They've stepped up the tempo of their play in the last few minutes, but the likes of Stephenson and Sherrod are struggling to get involved.
SHOT! Good from Liverpool academy graduate Marc Pelosi finds room to fire over after being picked out by Thompson.
SUBSTITUTION: The changes keep coming as Adam Jahn comes on to replace Sherrod.
United are controlling the game without doing too much damage to the San Jose defence now, but there should be space for them to create late chances as the hosts search for a way back into the match. Wilson continues to make excellent runs off the ball. United must find him more often.
Poor from Januzaj as he ignores the options on offer to take on his marker. The result is a poor touch which allows a promising United attack to break down. He's struggled to make an impact since being introduced.
The amount of changes at the break didn't do this match any favours, and it really does feel like a training session now as United keep the ball comfortably in midfield.
Thompson has a very hopeful look on his face after going down under pressure from Smalling in the box. It's certainly not a penalty. Perhaps just a moment of frustration for the San Jose attacker.
San Jose are running out of time to set up a dramatic finish. The MLS side are committing more men forward but they just can't keep the ball long enough to create any clear opportunities. It's not been a brilliant display from United in the second half, but the defence looks solid.
The Earthquakes enjoy another spell on top, with tricky winger Barrera causing problems before his cross is eventually cleared. It's been the story of the night for San Jose. The final ball hasn't been good enough.
It's United who continue to keep the ball better than their opponents. Van Gaal's side are heading for two wins from two on this tour.
FULL TIME: SAN JOSE 1-3 MAN UTD
United secure what turns out to be a comfortable victory as goals from Mata, Memphis and Pereira earn them a 3-1 win on the second match of their US tour. The tests get tougher now as they turn their attention to Saturday's clash with Barcelona.
That's all from our live coverage this evening. I hope you've enjoyed following the match with Sports Mole. Goodbye everyone!
